대장 김병주/한미연합사 부사령관
Good evening everyone.
This is the Deputy Commander of ROK-US Combined Forces Command and the Commander of Ground Component Command. It is a great honor and privilege to be speaking here today, as General Brooks is away on his TDY.
I would first like to express my sincere gratitude to President Han Chul-Soo and the members of the Korea America Friendship Society.
I would also like to extend my welcome to Mr. Marc Knapper, Mr. Jin Park, General(R) Kim Jae Chang, Mr. Lee, Jung Lin, former Vice Minister of MND, and all CFC and USFK service members and their families.
The year of 2017 was a tumultuous year for national security. North Korea engaged in several provocations, including the 6th nuclear test, numerous missile tests, and firing of arms against a soldier defecting through the JSA. As such, the ROK-US Alliance was direly needed and strong, and the CFC service members were united in one. When the nation called, the ROK-US Alliance served as its cornerstone.
The ROK-US Alliance is not any alliance. As President Moon mentioned during his wreath laying ceremony at the Chosin Reservoir Battle Memorial, the ROK-US Alliance is not an alliance signed on paper, but one forged in blood in the battlefield. And today, the ROK-US Alliance has reached beyond the realm of national security and is contributing to other parts of society including politics and economy.
KAFS has served as a reliable supporter that walked along our side for the past 27 years. It has contributed greatly to deeper friendship and a stronger alliance between the ROK and the US by hosting various activities, including national security seminars, veterans appreciation ceremonies and cultural activities.
The reason the ROK-US Alliance is stronger and CFC can maintain a stronger combined readiness posture is because of all your support and encouragement. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank you.
In the coming year of 2018, I have several wishes. I would like to ask you to wish for the same three wishes with me. My first wish is for the ROK-US Alliance to become even stronger so that we can overcome the security crisis on the Korean peninsula. My second wish is for us to host the Pyeongchang Olympics with great success, uniting the Korean society and elevating our nation’s stature around the globe. My last wish is for the ROK-US Alliance and the international community to collaborate closely to denuclearize North Korea, brings peace to the Korean Peninsula, and takes a step closer towards unification. CFC will remain faithful in our mission to realize these wishes.
It is quite cold outside, but there seems to be plenty of warmth surrounding the hall today. Once again, I would like to thank President Han, Chul Soo and KAFS officials for providing this great opportunity to strengthen our friendship.
I hope that the last month of 2017 is filled with happiness, and I would like to wish you a happy year of the Earth Dog. Thank you.
